Sussex County to hold referendum on proposed Herring Creek sewer district

Georgetown, Del., June 21, 2016: Residents and property owners of the Herring Creek Estates, Brandywood, Pinewater Farm and Winding Creek Village subdivisions near Angola will vote in a referendum next month on whether to bring public sewer service to approximately 800 properties to their communities and the surrounding area.

The Sussex County Engineering Department has proposed the creation of a new sewer district which would become an expansion to the Sussex County Unified Sewer District to include the communities that border the Inland Bays, where a request from the communities and concerns about aging and failing septic systems, and the water contamination caused, prompted the County to explore the creation of the new district earlier this year.

Qualified residents and property owners within the proposed area are invited to vote Saturday, July 9, 2016, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Conley’s United Methodist Church, 33106 Jolyn’s Way, Lewes. Absentee ballots are available for anyone unable to vote in person. To be counted, all absentee ballots must be received by the County no later than 4:30 p.m. Thursday, July 7, 2016.  Please call (302) 855-7706 to obtain an absentee ballot package.

Informational meetings regarding estimated connection charges and rates, as well as to answer public questions, were held in February and May.

Copies of the proposed sanitary sewer district map, as well as PowerPoint presentations explaining estimated rates and voter qualifications, are available online at sussexcountyde.gov/proposed-projects-schedules, or by calling (302) 855-1299.
