Sussex County Marriage Bureau to accept credit cards, offer after-hours appointments

Georgetown, Del., June 23, 2015: Sussex County is taking some of the hassle out of getting hitched.

Beginning July 1, Sussex County’s Marriage Bureau will begin accepting credit card payments for marrying couples. Historically, the office has only accepted cash, but with this change, will now accept Visa, MasterCard and Discover. Transactions will carry a 2.44 percent fee on licenses, which are $50 for Delaware residents and $100 for out-of-state residents.

Also, the office, which is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, will begin offering after-hours appointments to obtain licenses, seven days a week, similar to how the office already officiates ceremonies by appointment, including weekends and holidays.

Both steps are an effort to improve customer service for would-be newlyweds.

“We realize there are couples who work during regular business hours and can’t get into the office. As for credit cards, some people don’t always carry cash,” Clerk of the Peace John F. Brady said. “We believe these are small but important changes in our operation that will offer big conveniences for the public, and continue the tradition of making ‘memorable marriages’ here in Sussex County.”

The changes will come at no additional cost to County government, as the credit card convenience fee and staggered staff schedules will allow for the new features. For more information, visit sussexcountyde.gov/marriage-licenses.
