Nearly 40 high school students from throughout Sussex County participated in the 2016 County Government Day on Thursday, April 14, 2016, in Georgetown. The hands-on, interactive daylong event allowed students to take part in a mock County Council meeting in which they considered real-world issues, such as updating the County’s sign ordinance, taking a position on clean water legislation, considering a shopping center application, reviewing EMS accreditation, and deciding whether to adopt the Smart911 public safety campaign. Participants also met with County leaders and toured County facilities. The students were part of the American Legion's Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary's Girls State programs, which are aimed at introducing young people to the workings of government.
